Backups: how they work and how to restore
Your server is backed up every night. Here is how to make your own, protect one, restore it and keep a copy.
How backups work
KrillCloud makes an automatic backup of your server every night (some time between 03:00 and 06:00). Every plan has 2 backup slots, so the panel keeps two backups at a time. When both slots are full, the nightly backup replaces the oldest unlocked one, so by default you have the last two nights.
Backups are stored on your server's own drives, not somewhere else. Download the backups you care about and keep a copy on your own computer (see below).
Make a manual backup before big changes
Do this before you install plugins, change server software, add a modpack or edit important files.
- Log in to the game panel and open your server.
- Click Backups in the left-hand menu.
- If both slots are in use, the create button is greyed out and says Backup Limit Reached. Delete a backup you no longer need first (open the menu next to it and choose Delete Backup).
- Press the Create Backup button at the top of the page. You can name it, and tick the lock option to protect it straight away.
- Wait until it shows as finished before you carry on.
A manual backup never replaces an old one by itself. Only the nightly backup does that.
Lock a backup
A locked backup is protected. The nightly backup will not replace it, and it stays until you unlock or delete it.
- Open the Backups page.
- Click the menu next to the backup you want to keep.
- Choose Lock.
Lock a backup that you know is good, such as one taken just before a big update. Remember that a locked backup uses one of your two slots, so the nightly backup then only has one slot to rotate through. If both are locked, the nightly backup cannot run, so keep at least one unlocked.
Restore a backup
Restoring puts your server back to how it was when the backup was made. Anything done since then is lost.
- Open the Backups page.
- Stop the server first, if it is running.
- Click the menu next to the backup you want.
- Choose Restore.
- Confirm. You can tick Delete all files before restoring, which gives you an exact copy of that day. Leave it off to keep newer files that are not in the backup.
- Wait for the restore to finish, then start the server.
Check the world and your plugins when you are back in. A restore replaces your current files, so download a fresh backup first if you might want the current state back. You do not need to contact us.
Download a copy
- Open the Backups page.
- Click the menu next to a backup.
- Choose Download.
- Save the file somewhere safe on your computer.
Good habits
- Make a manual backup before every big change.
- Lock one known good backup.
- Download a copy of your world now and then.
- Restore only after stopping the server.
